Ken Langone is a co-founder of Home Depot and the founder and chairman of Invemed Associates LLC. He received a B.A. from Bucknell University and an M.B.A. from New York University's Stern School of Business. He serves on the Board of Overseers of the Stern School and on the Board of Trustees of New York University, as well as serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees of New York University Medical Center. In addition, he serves on the boards of St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Ronald McDonald House of NY, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Horatio Alger Society Foundation, and the Harlem Children's Zone and its charter school, the Promise Academy. He is also a Knight of Malta and a Knight of St. Gregory.

I picked this up after reading a favorable review in the Wall Street Journal, and I’m glad I did – it was entertaining, interesting, and had nice bits of information on the way business should be conducted: your word is your bond. Some may say there is a bit of bragging while the author is discussing the deals he was involved with over the years, but to paraphrase the late Dizzy Dean “it ain’t bragging if you can do it.”I enjoyed seeing the cast of characters, many of whom I remember reading about while I was younger, but I thought “man, it’s a small world” as one of the guys the author worked with, Jimmy Keane, also helped me and my little company out while we were doing an equity raise almost 20 years ago. I can relate to and 100% agree with his comments regarding Bob Nardelli, as I also worked for GE Power Systems for five years.The first 75% of the book talks about the deals the author did and as I said I thought they were interesting and it is more of an autobiography. The last 25% really had pearls of wisdom I wish all young business students would read and take to heart. Without having a spoiler, I’ll just leave it at this: the tide will rise!

I mostly became familiar with Ken Langone on the Cavuto shows. I came to admire him a great deal, even if his politics are a somewhat more Progressive than mine (as are Cavuto’s). But I admired him a lot more for his business acumen and generosity with the money he has earned through hard work, brains, and a bit of good fortune. We could all do a lot worse than emulate his public approach to life.I bought this book because I wanted to know more about him and the book provides that. Since Langone is a very voluble man, I imagine that much of the stories and anecdotes in the book are stories he has included in his various speeches and interviews over the decades of his public life, but I didn’t know them and am glad to have them here in one easy to read handy volume.Langone comes across as a very hard working man who enjoys making deals and earning money. These are traits his upbringing taught him through his hard working and poor father and grandfather. Langone, likes the cushion money can give him in life. Yes, he likes the comforts and luxuries of life. But he likes more using his success to bless the lives of others because of his faith. John D. Rockefeller had that same urgent charity. God blessed them with money through their natural gifts, hard work, and the skills they learned. Their obligation was to turn that money into more. Ken Langone repeatedly points out in the book that while he likes the luxuries he enjoys, he likes the lives he has been able to lift through his many businesses and deals and charity even more. To me, he seems very sincere in this. The fruits of his life testify to the man he actually is. And the stories he tells and the actions match up.Langone covers stories that made the papers and TV from his perspective. He elaborates on some, corrects others, and is willing to set the story straight for a few people he clearly does not admire much. Even then, he is never vicious or petty. He doesn’t have to be. They can’t hurt him. But he wants us to know what the truth is as he sees it.Personally, I think the world is a much better place because of Ken Langone and his business partners. I admire them all. They took the risks and made it pay off for themselves, their partners, their employees, and we who are their customers. Home Depot has made your life and my life better even if you never spent a nickel there. How? Because your contractors almost certainly did. Home Depot also made the market more efficient for home repair and do it yourselfers. Their competition with Lowe’s drove prices down for each of us. Even if you like your local hardware store, they survived because they adapted and learn to compete because of Home Depot. So, we all owe the founders of Home Depot real gratitude. They led the way in big box single market stores.My only reservation with the book is that Ken Langone must speak with a salty vocabulary and he uses it in the book to be honest about who he is. I could have done with a bit less of that honesty. How do I give this book to a kid to read and get inspired when it is full of curse words? Sure, it is everywhere nowadays. But not from me. I did give it to my CEO entrepreneurial daughter because she and I love business so much. But she’s an adult.Get the book and enjoy it. I did.

He tells of his relationships with historical power brokers, and his own personal ingenuity in brokering deals.It’s true when they say that “Capitalism” is too often thought of as a dirty word, but without it, and without capitalists like Ken Langone who don’t exploit, but instead share and build, where would we be?For those who think “Capitalism” is a dirty word, challenge yourself and read this book through. It’s interesting.

I’d seen Ken Langone many times on CNBC. He’s blunt and funny. Also very smart.I didn’t know the full Home Depot story and I found that very interesting. I wanted more on the Grasso story and the disgraced Eliott Spitzer.Three people at Bucknell made a huge difference in his life. He’s paid Bucknell back, big time.Ken and his wife have been very generous. The inside story on NYU was interesting.The inspirational part is how a plumber’s son became a billionaire.Two questions:1. When Nardelli was CEO of HD why did the stock price stay flat when the numbers were great?2. When he left Pressprich, he wrote that his capital was trapped there. Is that true? Or did he get it back over a number of years?I also liked the score settling with the likes of Ming the Merciless.

I've read all the Michael Lewis books, a few day trading books, a couple insider trading books, Sheelah Kolhatkar's Black Edge, but Ken Langone's I Love Capitalism is, so far, my favorite stock market/Wall St. oriented book. Langone writes as if he is sitting down having a conversation with you with just the right amount of profanity sprinkled in. His dealings with Ross Perot are amusing. Highly recommended.

This is a very honest and heartfelt book by someone, who despite becoming very, very successful, never forgot his roots and the many people who have helped him along the way. In this day and age, he is refreshing because he values: family, friends, ethics, his country, giving back and God. Mr. Langone, is clearly bright, but it is apparent from his humility that despite his hard work, if God were not assisting him and people who have helped him along the way, he would never have reached such a high level of wealth. It is a very inspiring, honestly written book that I read in one weekend. Thank you to the author.
