I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could. The bottom line for me was that I couldn't feel deep empathy for Michelle. I certainly tried. There were times when I felt sorry for her. The combination of growing up in a disadvantaged, decrepit town with nasty, out-of-control kids and in a home with an abusive father and later a stepfather with substance-abuse issues as well as something worse had to be mind blowing. However, I purchased the book because I'd read that I was going to be reading about her violent father and her Catholic-school upbringing consisting of mean nuns. Immediately I was interested--my father was violent and I dealt with some mean nuns. I thought I was going to feel like her soul sister! But her biological father wasn't in the picture for her entire childhood, and the abuse wasn't usually directed towards Michelle. The nuns weren't so bad, and I found myself feeling sorrier for them than for the children. A great deal has happened between the time I grew up in the fifties and sixties and the seventies and eighties when Michelle grew up.Also, I grew very tired of the stream-of-consciousness style with the endless sentences and the childlike delivery with the poor grammar--"Me and Stephanie went..." The multitude of words. The endless paragraphs which I read and promptly forgot. The Goth subculture got old. I don't know how many paragraphs it took for her to describe her retrieval of a ball at the beach. The endless descriptions of clothes and accessories. I'll admit that she does what good writers are supposed to do and captures all the smells and the feel of a place. It was addictive reading in a way because there was some outrageous stuff--kids acting out big time--and the curiosity factor takes over. In the last quarter of the book I found myself feeling more empathy for Michelle and more attachment to the story. In fact, there is one episode when Michelle is feeling panic--feeling as though she is on the edge of insanity due to a substance she has ingested and for those minutes I felt so at one with her that I could feel myself begin to panic. Michelle Tea is a talented writer. I would have been so much happier if some great stories weren't lost in a sea of words.
Good ole Chelsea!
In her disturbing, funny, and often lyrical memoir, Tea effectively captures the ugliness and grit of our shared hometown (two writers from Chelsea, Massachusetts--it's a miracle!). I'm not sure if an outsider would have the same reaction, but I could see every detail clearly as her prose triggered buried memories of places and a way of life I've gladly left behind. The dominant emotion of the memoir is anger, and very understandably, given the backward culture of Chelsea. But then Tea completely startles with passages of poetic description--always maintaining her tone, skating that fine line to avoid falling into sentimentality. The tension between her tough persona and the beautifully expressed insights sustains the story, adding layers of intriguing complexity.
