Alfred Hitchcock is quickly becoming one of my favorite film directors, and for good reason. He was able to tap into primal emotions in a way that many couldn't. And for this same reason I love this biography by Donald Spoto. Seeing as he featured prominently in the various retrospective documentaries packaged with the fifteen films I watched last month, I knew I had to get my hands on this book because he seemed to be the definitive interpreter of Hitchcock's oeuvre and personality. While arranged in typical biography fashion, i.e., chronologically, Spoto interweaves his own assessment of Hitchcock's psychology and how this manifested itself in his art. That aspect was most fascinating and keeps it from being a by-the-numbers list of facts/filmography. It's also packed with anecdotes and footnotes that provide additional insight. From a literary perspective, it's one of the best biographies I've ever read and I was able to power my way through it because I was so invested in the material and the way it was presented. Although I was familiar with bits and pieces of Hitchcock's personal life, there were certain details revealed (towards the end of his career) that alternately made my stomach turn and yet still feel pity for him. In no small part I feel the latter because I saw a lot of psychological similarities between him and myself (at least in the way we approach human relationships). If you're the least bit interested in film history, or Hitchcock in particular, I would highly recommend this. It's well-organized, fun to read, and contains a wealth of information and analysis.
Arguably the best book ever written about the Master of Suspense. Spoto is the consumate biographer and Hitchcock perhaps the greatest Director in cinema history. The author creates a psychological portrait that illuminates this man’s private life, his secrets, and how they culminated with his brilliant talent. Hitch also had a dark side (hence the title) most notably with his obsession with the twenty-six-year-old Tippi Hedren, the last of the memorable Hitchcock blondes. Excellent audio narration makes Spoto’s revelations much more vivid.
Being a film noir and Hitch fan, could resist dong some critical research and reading on him during my MFA program. Seems that Hitch has a very dark side.I love him, however after reading some of his quirks, if he was alive and I worked for him, I would never take a drink he offered me..Why, read the book. This is a book I have bought as gifts for other Hitchcock fans.
It was most telling that Alfred Hitchcock’s films revealed a persona that could not escaped the scars of childhood and the unfulfilled longings they left.
Spoto, imho, is the gold-standard of celebrity bios. Great chronology and many interviews. Gives a sense of the man and his art, warts and all!
Very well told, scholarly, and lively discourse on one of cinemas most enigmatic artists. Well worth the time
very good biography, probably one of the best about Hitch.
Criticizing Spoto has become sort of a cottage industry, but there is little reason to doubt the "dark side" behaviors he describes. I'll just leave that part at that. But it is also about his genius. Hitchcock was a master of the technical elements of filmmaking, who knew every lens and light and plotted out films in detail. Actors, he wasn't all that interested in. They were a necessary evil required to make his films. The exception was his well-known penchant, then obsession, with the "cool blond" that culminated in the personal meltdown with Tippi Hedren in The Birds and Marnie. Perhaps Soto might be accused of stretching armchair psychology a bit ("B.M." on the ring in Shadow of a Doubt means "bowel movement?") But there's a reason this exhaustive work has endured. It is by no means merely a hit-piece or gossip book. It is a serious biography that traces his career from English silent all the way to its end.
