This review is for the HARD COPY version.I’ve been tutoring the ACT for over a decade, have scored perfectly on it as an adult, and have coached a student to a perfect score, as well as many others to perfect scores on individual sections. I run a Youtube channel offering free ACT / SAT prep and college advice (SupertutorTV) and also have created an online prep course for the ACT. In short, I know the ACT.When it comes to ACT prep books, the number one advice I have for my students is to USE AUTHENTIC MATERIALS from the test maker. That means if you’re taking the ACT, and can afford nothing but one book, this is the number one resource I would recommend. The ACT test got a minor reboot in 2014 when ACT added probability items to the math section, reduced the number of science passages from 7 to 6, and added a dual reading passage section. The ACT has also revamped the essay a couple of times since 2014. This book reflects all those changes better than any previous books.There are a few updates this book includes that the previous editions of the book don’t:1) A new, 4th test included in the book (awesome!). This is a recent test (form code 74C) that was administered in June 20172) Access to an online question “bank” instead of printable pdf versions of the “bonus” questions that came with older versions of this guide (2015-2016 and the latest 2016-2017 which has no date on the cover). (not awesome!). Each book includes a scratch off code, so best to purchase new, not used, if you want to take advantage of these online questions. As before, these include around 100 of each subject matter pulled from the Real ACT Prep guide that has since been taken out of print.3) Essays that reflect the latest version of the essay prompt (previously, the question required students to integrate “multiple perspectives” or all three perspectives. The newer version of the prompt is reworded and broader, asking students to incorporate “at least one” other perspective; other versions of the prep guide may not include the correct prompts for the essay).Why four stars then? Well, this update to last year’s guide has a few disappointments.My number one complaint is the fact that the question bank is now online only. Having the ability to PRINT the bonus questions made them much more valuable, and this was possible with the older version of this same guide.Studies have shown that students focus less when reading from screens and performance may be affected. Additionally, it’s best to prep using the same method you would use when actually taking the test. That makes your practice experience closer to your testing experience. Printing to paper gives students that experience. Doing questions in a question bank online doesn’t.The other issue with the question bank is that it randomizes the order of the questions and passages. Though this may not matter for some sections, in the math it means it’s harder to tell which math questions should be “easy” and which ones “hard” so that students can more easily do the ones that are most applicable to them. In the past version the start of the packet was on the easy side and around question 40 the questions got harder, and then reset after question 50 and again after question 75. It wasn’t perfect, but easier to track than this mess of an online system, at least for tutors trying to assign the hardest questions to students, or students looking for streaks of hard questions.Additionally, the OFFICIAL ACT PREP GUIDE (this book) and all versions of it borrows heavily from the previous book of ACT Tests pre 2014 changes called The Real ACT (CD) 3rd Edition (Official Act Prep Guide), particularly in the math sections (more on this below). That's kind of annoying, as it means you can't buy both books and get 9 tests. If you buy both you get more like 7 tests. I know the other one is out of print, but it would still be nice to be able to buy that book used and get even more tests to practice with in complete form.Now let’s first discuss what this includes:1) Four “real” ACT tests.The first three exams appear to be identical to the previous editions of this guide. I’ve noted the form codes these were sourced from in case you know of these past exams.Test 1 (diagnostic): English, Reading, Science (Jun 2015 73C), Math (73C+10 random questions from The Real ACT Prep Guide exams, mix of exams, and a few originals),Test 2: English, Reading, Science (Apr 2015 73G), Math (random questions from The Real ACT Prep Guide exams, mostly from Exam #2, and a few originals),Test 3:English (Test 5 from Real ACT Prep Guide), Reading, Science (Test 4 from Real ACT Prep Guide), Math (Many from test 4 from the Real ACT Prep Guide, some random from that Guide, plus a few 73G questions and a few originals.)Test 4: June 2017 Code 74C, all sections2) Essay promptsAll tests include a complete essay prompt; a fifth prompt is in the chapter on the essay, for five total prompts.3) Chapters that review the basic content of each section and have some example questionsThough this might seem to be a great resource, advice from the test makers is rarely as good as advice from private tutors who write books. I’m probably biased (I’m a private tutor who is working on writing some ACT books), but even before I wrote books, I knew the best tips I found for my students weren’t from the test makers. Ideas like “read carefully and thoroughly," are terrible advice for some students who when doing so can’t even finish half of a section. Many students are better off FINISHING than reading everything carefully. True, the book also has pacing strategies, but they aren’t written based on people who are on the ground with students trying to help them exploit test weaknesses or maximize scores. Sure, in an ideal world we we be good little students and do everything the “right” way, but real test prep is about optimization, not being a “good student.” It’s about working within the constraints of the test and maximizing your ability to get questions right. The idea that some students are different and your strategy may be different from someone else’s isn’t really accounted for here in a clear way. The voice of the book feels more objective than insightful in its advice.The biggest value of this book is the real tests, not the section advice. If you want test prep advice, get another book from an independent tutor. Still, content tips in the English and Math could be somewhat useful for those with no other resources or limited budgets.ALSO: Many of the “real” examples from these topic based chapters are part of fully released exams from prior years, such as 61C (the packet released free of charge in 2008-2009). As a result, the example material is not a huge boon for students, but actual a bit of a "spoiler" for anyone who digs up these old, free, released pdf tests online and wants to use them to practice full exams.If you’re looking to maximize your access to REAL materials, here are your other options:1) Upgrade to the The Official ACT Prep Pack with 6 Full Practice Tests (4 in Official ACT Prep Guide + 2 Online) and get access to two online tests in addition to the four tests in the book. Practicing online, though, is not ideal if you’re taking this on paper. (See my note above) (ACT now offers a small percentage of test takers the opportunity to take the test on computers, but I don’t recommend doing so).2) Get a copy of the The Real ACT (CD) 3rd Edition (Official Act Prep Guide)in addition to this book.You’ll likely want to skip most of the math sections except for anecdotal practice (particularly tests 4 and 2 which show up heavily on the math section of the newer book), but other sections are useful. Know that the reading has no dual passages, and that the science has more passages but the same number of questions. Also, avoid English test #5, and Science and Reading test #4, as these are identical to test #3 in the Official Guide you would get from this page.3) Find the previously released free exams that ACT.org has offered students from prior years before the test tweaks in 2014.There is one free right now at ACT.org, and many sites have cataloged old editions of the Preparing for the ACT packet from past years. A quick online search for Free PDF ACT practice tests or "Preparing for the ACT" pdf should help you find some of these.Overall:Get this for the tests (you can't beat real tests!)Skip most of the chapter advice by topic (Math, Science, Reading, etc.) unless you can't afford more books or alternate options.Online materials are ok but not perfect.One final note: I've also purchased the Kindle version. It is nearly illegible on the portions of the book that are the test; you can't zoom in on these pages at all so the print is so tiny it can't be read. Total waste of money. I do not recommend it at all. Previous versions on the Kindle were much better quality and were far more useable. I don't know why this one is so terrible.

Over the years I have coached my students to scores as high as 36.The Official ACT Prep Guide, 2018-19 Edition is the same book as previous editions, such as the Official ACT Prep Guide 2018 and the Official ACT Prep Guide 2016-2017, other than the fact that it now includes a 4th paper test (the June 2017 ACT Form 74C) and some minor updates/revisions, most notably to the wording of the essay prompts in the Writing section of each exam. Yet this book continues to be the most essential preparation guide for the ACT, because it is the only source of official test questions—the practice ACTs in all other books are nothing more than subpar imitations of the real thing.Below are my top 13 recommendations for ACT Preparation:1) Official ACT Practice Tests. You can access 4 official Practice Tests in the newest edition of the Official ACT Prep Guide, but you can also access many others for free online.Make sure not only to take the tests, but to create an error log and review your mistakes in detail afterward. Keep in mind that all other sources of ACT practice questions are subpar (but sometimes necessary) imitations of the real thing.Yes, the older tests are still helpful despite being (slightly) different and (slightly) easier than more recent ACTs. This website is brand-new, but I’ve heard great things about the content with regard to the AP exams. If UWorld isn't enough, then it’s probably worth a shot for $39 for 10 months access, as opposed to Magoosh ($79 for just one month access).12) The ACT Prep Black Book. This one is definitely not perfect. The author dispenses some advice that I don’t agree with, but it’s still helpful if you prefer to have detailed, written explanations of your ACT questions. Lots and lots of pages of strategy advice…not for the faint of heart.13) ACT Academy (free) adaptive online learning program. This site is official and free, but full of silly videos and corporate-sponsored filler, and needs a lot of improvement. It’s a far cry from the quality of Khan Academy, after which it’s likely modeled, but at least it does include plenty of real ACT questions.Honorable Mention: Ivy Global ACT Guide (full disclosure: I've used Ivy Global's SAT books extensively, and am a big fan of their detailed and thorough books with lots of practice, but haven't had time to try out IG's ACT book yet).Unless otherwise noted above, the materials are paid materials. In some cases (Quantum ACT Prep, for example), there are free videos as well as paid videos.I have ranked the videos lower than the books because I prefer learning from books and adaptive online learning programs to static videos. The best book you can get for ACT prep. Written by the test makers, it is a must have to improve your score. I have be tutoring for the ACT for 15 years, this is the only book I will spend my money on.

Honestly, I didn't use this myself. I bought it for my daughter and she told me to rate it a 5. She took the ACT and scored a 32, so we're very pleased. She did study hard for the test. But this book was money well spent.

The current 1-2 star reviews are being a bit unfair. They are complaining about the Kindle version. To be honest, I don't know why you would want tests in the kindle version anyway, you want to take the tests on paper as you would in the test room. This book is the same as the previous edition, but they added a completely new test. I am a self-employed full-time test prep tutor and certified teacher running up to ten years of experience. The CONTENT of the book is what I'm reviewing, and I love practice tests. The new practice test is refreshing, they are also keeping the price point the same as previously, thus increasing the overall value of the book.

It was easy to take the test, find the answers, and calculate my score. The answer key offered clear explanations for all of the possible choices, which helped me see where I went wrong and what I could do better. With this as my only study resource, my score went up 3 points from my previous testing.

Absolutely awesome. Used in conjunction with the ACT Prep Black Book, my daughter's ACT score went from 23 to 29, scoring her a Platinum Presidential Scholarship at her university.

Bought for my granddaughter. Beware over 900 pages. I had hoped it would have come with a CD for practice test. Sadly it does not.

This was a terrific book which I enjoyed a lot. It's well written, concise and filled with good "car-guy" advice.I've always enjoyed reading about cars and have wide-ranging tastes, so this book filled the bill in many ways. It's in my "car-guy" room on the bookshelf with many other books, but it's a good one that I'll keep until my kids sell it at my estate sale some day (not to soon, I hope).Rob's a good writer and the photos are also quite excellent.

This is a well written guide to collector cars that "real people" can afford. You wont find any information on Bugattis in here, but you will find some interesting and fun facts about cars that you might have owned in the past or are thinking of buying. I bought 2 copies at Amazon and gave one to a friend -- he has read it from cover to cover as well. I know Rob Sass - he writes for SCM as well as Hagerty's magazine and the New York Times automobile section. His stories are full of humor as well as personal tales of the many cars he has owned, driven and restored. This would make a great gift for an aspiring gearhead or a dyed in the wool car guy.

This book has a lot of good information and is also entertaining.

If you're constantly dragging home project cars like me this is a great book to help you know what you're getting into before you drag said project home. Mostly covers import sports cars and hardly any domestic stuff though.

What a great book about old cars. It makes it less daunting to buy and use an old car. Now I just need to escape Manhattan. Does Mr. Sass have a book for that?

I had never even heard of this book, and then I saw it on the shelf at Barnes and Noble. I have been restoring old cars, starting with my Grandfathers '67 Dodge, and that led into Hemmings Classic Cars, Sports & Exotics and Muscle Machines, and then other cars as well. This book is a must have for those interested in foreign sports cars, but has a good section titled American Iron as well. The photos are great color & deatil, and the mix of advice and personal experience is like having a bunch of the Illustrated Buyers Guides (do they still make those? Old ones are on Amazon used, but I havent seen any new ones in a long time) rolled into one book. I will keep this book permanently. Cant recommend it highly enough.

Classic cars aren't just for rich folk--that's the gospel according to Sass. The author proves his point again and again in this collection of amusing adventures buying and selling great old cars. To wit--he put together a collection of three very sporty examples (a Lancia, a Datsun 240Z, and a Volvo P1800) for less than $9000...all rust free, all in drivable condtion.This is a great handbook for anyone new to the hobby, but any gearhead will find it an enjoyable and enlightening read. But be forewarned... readers may find themselves with a new addiction to Craigslist.

This book is very complete in that it provides some history to the art of calligraphy, and some history behind the various alphabets covered.

I wanted to learn to write calligraphy. I knew a little already, but I wanted to refresh my skills and learn some new ones. As a teacher, I wanted to be able to impress my students with fancy letters sometimes. And, for other occasions like addressing a birthday card, or a love note to my wife, I wanted something to make people say, “Oooh! Did you write that?” Also, being able to write in calligraphy often makes you seem learned and knowledgeable of esoteric things. I’m all about that! I need all the help I can get seeming to be educated in mysterious and arcane subjects. So, I got some pens and this book. I’m very glad I did. This is a great book to, well, learn calligraphy.The first thing I like about it is that it is HAND LETTERED! I was kind of stunned to find this out. The entire text is written in calligraphy by hand. This is not a type set. That, in an of itself, makes the book worth looking at. I can’t imagine the work it took to write the entire book by hand.Additionally, the book is good at teaching you to write calligraphy, which is exceedingly helpful in a book called “Learn Calligraphy.” I disagree slightly with the author’s choice to begin with the Roman font, however. I learned “Chancery Italic” and “Gothic” some years ago (okay, 30 years ago). The Roman alphabet is simple in structure. But, nib angle is an issue. The Z is very difficult, as is the S. And many letters require you to change nib angle from 20 degrees to 45 degrees. But, on the other hand, her explanations and exercises teach you this. I just would have liked to start with an alphabet that was a little simpler in technique and more practical. Roman is, I think, really only good for titles. So, it’s hard to start using it for fun.That’s a very small issue, though. Mostly, I am very impressed with her great instructions and advice. Even though I don’t prefer it, I’m going to follow her instructions and go through the book little by little, doing the exercises, and learning the letters and strokes as she presents them. The book is designed to be a full course in calligraphy over time. You can’t digest the book all at once or quickly. It isn’t meant to be done that way. It’s meant to teach you the movements and habits that make calligraphy possible.Another strength of the book is the variety of fonts. She covers Roman, Celtic, Gothic, Bookhand, and Italic. Each alphabet has variations. In Roman, she covers the basic letter construction and then shows you five variations with serifs. It’s not huge, but I would argue that each style of serif does change the character and feel of the letters. She covers spacing the letters, as well, which can be difficult with some letters because the Roman alphabet has varying widths. She also shows a few examples of projects done with the Roman hand so you can see how it could be applied to your own artwork. Finally, she shows the “narrow” or Rustica version and “wide” or Quadrata forms of the Roman alphabet. So, if you’re counting, you have eight versions of the Roman alphabet: sans serif, five different serifs, Rustica, and Quadrata! Besides that, she also covers various flourishes and adornments for the alphabets. Oh yeah, you fancy now!Shepherd also includes some history on each alphabet and the book is arranged chronologically. So, by studying it page by page, you are also studying the history of letters. It helps to know some of the why the letters were formed the way they were.Finally, there are practice sheets included. However, you should make copies or use them as guidelines to put lines on your own paper. Or, for convenience, you can go to her website and print out pages on which to practice, which is kind of her. In all, this is great purchase for the calligraphy learner.

I am very critical of these books that claim to instruct and then you open the book expecting to learn and instead you see pages of their interpretation of art. In this book you see lessons and key teaching points such as how to connect letters, true grip and direction. I enjoy this book. I would say I would recommend it.

I recommend three manuals for the novice calligrapher: Calligraphy and Illumination: A History and Practical Guide by Patricia Lovett, The Calligrapher's Bible by David Harris (see my reviews of both texts) and this text, Learn Calligraphy by Margaret Shepherd, one of the foremost experts on the subject. While there are, of course, other books and certainly a selection of internet videos demonstrating various aspects of the subject, I have yet to discover any others that so thoroughly cover the material in such an organized manner and anticipate many of the stumbling blocks and questions often encountered by the novice. Ms. Shepherd's book starts right at the beginning and details all the does and don't s, obstacles and observations that a novice will chance to encounter from the start and answers the usual questions that every beginner will ask before and after having begun the task of learning the craft. While Ms. Lovett's text delves into greater depth and detail, Learning Calligraphy is the first text that I would recommend before referring to any other since this will definitely get you started and keep you going. I would also recommend her daily blog and website as it is happily filled with an endless assortment of perspectives, insights and recommendations for anyone searching for inspiration along the way. Margaret Shepherds other books are also outstanding but this is the one to get you started before digging into the others.

Probably the most complete book of calligraphy I have read so far. Very very interesting learning about the beginning of this art and the continuation of it. Also explains really good the different types of calligraphy. Would definitely recommend to any buddy that would like to learn this forgotten written art.

I've barely leafed through this book and already I see tons of excellent instructions here. Most calligraphy/lettering books just cover the basics (paper, nibs, good posture, etc) but she has gone into detail with pictures on the weight of the strokes, the combining of strokes, the degrees for which your nib needs to be angled... I'm so happy to have such a thorough guide on real calligraphy (sorry, this isn't really for faux calligraphy, but I think everyone can benefit from it). If your want to truly master your dip pens, this is the book to buy!!!

A little disappointed. I was hoping for practice pages, instructional pages or tracing samples. I would relate it more to a 'history of' rather than a 'learn how-to'. It is not a bad book, just not what I was hoping for.

Excellent resource for learning the fine lost art of Calligraphy. I bought this for myself but also for my children whom we homeschool, so that they may learn a solid penmanship. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to learn.

This is my favorite of several calligraphy books that I own. I like it better than the pricier one my teacher recommended. I just got back into calligraphy after several years, so I was very rusty. This book points out specifics about forming some of the italic letters in nearly full page illustrations, and has helped me to notice details that have really improved my work. It is concise and informative, and contains good exercises. She has written the full book in calligraphy! Unless you are advanced, you will find this book to be an excellent self teaching tool.

With its refined cover, silver gilded pages, a greater number of pages, and more variety, it is "Beaches" grown-up sister.Every bit as colorful, it's even more breathtaking. Shots are mostly scenic, with some lifestyle ones interspersed.If, like I, you are strictly a beach person, don't be put off: Surf, Pool (my fave! A throwback to Esther Williams days), Sand, and Isles comprise at least half the book — but I still enjoyed viewing the rest.

Just received this today and its beautiful and a great addition to my coffee table (will be joining the book "Beaches")

What a treat to have found this book while browsing for interior design books to place on a foyer console table! The front cover immediately sucked me in because I love photography such as this. Although incorrect, I like to call such photos the “little person” photo where the people are small against a beautiful, vast backdrop. I can’t wait to place this on my coffee table so friends and family can browse through its pages. Gray Malin’s words in the book are few from what I’ve gathered since page 92, but so well written. Short and sweet is what I appreciate. The book is also beautiful and substantial.

This is a gorgeous, dream inspiring book. The perfect dull, winter day escape. Malin captures his subjects in such a simple, but mesmerizing way that you’re completely captivated. I could stare at these pages for hours.

Awesome book, but slightly damaged on one corner. We decided it wasn't worth the hassle to return.

Its a great book and the photos are very lovely.
