He defines the â€œblue mindâ€ as a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life. It is inspired by water and the sensations associated with it. â€œ...[W]ater provides the most profound shortcut to happiness out there.â€He explores our emotional ties to water, explains the technology of brain study, contemplates what happiness is and how it is evaluated, looks at the affect of the color blue and the other sensations of water. Having a degree in Marine Biology, I found some of the information in the book to be a bit of "common sense"..... Or so I thought. But when I began teaching college biology to nonmajors, I realized that this book can really light those students up. Blue Mind really got some of my students excited about the oceans and ecology, engaged at greater levels with the endocrine system and hormones, gave them a better idea of anatomy and physiology, and most importantly, I think, showed my students that science is relevant NOW, and to them. Dr. Nichols is a great example of a scientist and advocate to a generation of young adults who are just waiting for his messages!

I admit, I'm a water-aholic. I learned to swim before I could walk. I've always take the opportunity to jump into the water...even in the cold. This book is a powerful treatise to understand our connection with this magical blue stuff....it makes up the water, it makes up the sky, and it makes up us...we're over 70% water ourselves, the same exact makeup of the ocean.This is one beautiful book, and the work 'J' has done to bring water to our minds, and to help save the sea-turtles, is beyond commendable. I cannot recommend this book enough; except when given a choice between reading and heading to the water...put down the book, and head for the water...you'll thank yourself for it!

Another fine Nolo legal book. This book has a nice history section to help understand the development of USA immigration policy over the past 200 years.While I consider this an excellent resource, for those looking for more specific information they might want to select another Nolo book. For example if you are interested in a fiance visa, this book has one chapter of six pages (plus many pages of examples of forms) and another chapter of 14 pages on a green card via marriage but you might be better off buying their book specifically on "Fiance & Marriage Visas" (512 pages).

I was a bit discouraged by some of the reviews before I bought the book. But I found it a great book for my purposes, which involved gaining a solid foundation about the immigration laws. I think I got that by reading the book. I learned that there are many twists and turns involved with the process. So, I recommend the book to those who want a basic understanding of the different types of visas, who qualifies for each, and the many pitfalls to avoid in the application process. True, there are copies of the various forms that were not of interest to me, as a lay person in the subject. But I have a friend who is an immigration counselor. I now have a much better understanding of what she can get into with clients, and their specific situations and requests/needs. If she knows her stuff, she can really be helpful to folks who do not understand their rights or the pittfalls they need to avoid. For example, in many cases of applications, folks getting married will bar them from immigration, while others in the family who remain unmarried will be fine. Also, coming to the U.S. as a visitor or a student, one must be sure to indicate that they are not coming with the purpose of finding a way to stay. That kind of stuff can really cause you problems later. But if one comes as a visitor or a student, then finds that they want to get married and/or take a job, there are ways to make this work, legally. Come in illegally, and that process is much more difficult. Also, the book, at times, makes very personal comments about how great many visa applicants feel when they finally get approval. For many, it can take 10 or more years.As I have said several times, I recommend this book for its purpose of providing a basic understanding of the different types of visas, how they can be obtained, and the pitfalls to avoid in pursuing them.

Extremely well written and informative. A good precursor to "Fiance and Marriage Visas: A Couple's Guide to US Immigration". But not really needed as the above goes over everything you need.
