I made the mistake of taking this book on a long plane flight, much to my regret. Complete waste of time and insult to one's intelligence, unless one likes the Ronald Reagan simplistic view of the world. Though now the white Russians are the good guys, and why not they are white and probably even good Christians, and the yellow Chinese are the bad guys (non-white and non-Christians). In addition to Clancy's obvious racial bigotry, he obviously shares Bush II's love for war from a distance where smart bombs kill dumb enemies with no American lives risked or lost. He has shown that beyond a fascination with war machinery and strategy, he has a school boy's adulation of men in uniform and a tremendous desire to demonstrate to the reader that he is "a real macho man", i.e. a soldier, brave and true. This book might be of value to a psychologist probing Clancy's insecurities about his manhood as he ages, but it provides little entertainment value and certainly provides no insight into war or the men who choose to make a living out of war.
I don't believe Clancy actually wrote this book. It isn't like his prior Ryan books. It's over 1000 pages, and if you deleted all the "f" words, it probably would have been 100 pages shorter. Not having references to sex and whores/prostitutes could have cut another 100 pages. He could have been just fine not adding useless filler to demonstrate his knowledge of history. I had a hard time even getting interested in it and almost gave up about 10 chapters into it. It finally did pick up and I stayed the course, despite multiple typo errors and repeated statements in different parts of the book. Evidently, even the editors couldn't get through it all. Very disappointing. I ordered two more of the books in the series at the same time and really hope they are much better (written by Greany). Of the 13 books that I have read of the Ryan/Ryan JR/Clark series of books, this is the first one I've given a negative rating on, as I normally love his books.
As always Tom Clancy was a Master Story Teller in the Bear and The Dragon. This is a great read, full of action and detail most authors can only dream of. This last installment of the Jack Ryan series is an amazing read. HOWEVER!!!!The Kindle version has a lot of errors. I have the hardback of this book and it is a lot cleaner then the Kindle Version. First it's listed as a John Clark Book. It's not. Look at the Hardback. Second, there are more spelling errors/ formatting errors then seems possible. I think Clancy is turning over in his grave over this. For instance several chapters, sentences and words start out with an extra letter or the the wrong letter as this real example here. "Fit was a wark night . . ." Instead of "It was a dark night." It doesnt detract from the amazing story, it just makes it a little annoying as you read along, especially as you reach the end and realize just how many errors there are. I have a first edition hardback that doesn't have that many errors. Not sure what happened. But you should enjoy it as long as you don't mind the errors. Enjoy!
After reading the (mostly negative) reviews I didn't plan on reading this book, but then realized I wouldn't learn about the beginning of Campus, which is important to understand the background for the second book. I figured to decide myself if it was a 'bad' book or not, and was in for a pleasant surprise! While it lacks the detailed technical descriptions of previous books, this one was a fast paced, easy read and before I knew it, reached the end of the book. It ends with a cliffhanger, so I wonder if Clancy picks up the thread in the next book. Looking forward to continue reading the series.
I rate Clancy's Classic, early stories five stars. Hunt for Red October and Cardinal of the Kremlin are the best, Clear and Present Danger and Without Remorse are also good tales with good characters, well written. This book shows the weaker side of a formula followed for too long. The Ryan character is now fully emersed in a fantasy world and characters that were filled out in earlier books are now hollow shadows. And, the gratuitous sex and Jack Ryan's increasing use of foul language don't ring true compared to Clancy's earlier stories. I wonder if, at the time of this book, Clancy started using uncredited "collaborators" to boost his writing output? This story still provides some entertaining reading, but it is far less compelling than the earlier work that made Tom Clancy the highest standard in spy/techno adventures.
Worst "Tom Clancy" book ever written. Tom Clancy would never have allowed this pile of garbage to be published. Whoever really wrote it has no idea about military equipment or operations. Seems like it was written by a Sophomore in High School trying to get his grade from a D to a C.
Is the reason I bought my first bag of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee. Loaded with conservative ideology, Russophilia and good coffee, paired with some sex scenes that may have been written by a twelve year old, what's not to love?Seriously, though, I loved this book. If you're a millennial liberal, don't bother, it will make you mad.
Tom Clancy's books have always been a favorite. I loved Jack Ryan, and I know he was a central figure in this novel as well. However, it appears I no longer have the patience to read until it becomes interesting for me to continue. Couldn't keep up with the characters, and although I hate to say this, I was just plain bored. A book is "good" for me if it is difficult to put down.
A very long and unnecessarily drawn out novel which included too much detail about war planning and the various weapons used. U.S. casualties were unrealistically low. Author did not recognize the U.S. National Missile Defense system. Not believable that the Russians would allow the Chinese to retreat from their soil without retribution. I read the book to the end to find out what would happen; it held my attention. This book is not up to Clancy's past books for credibility.
