Another fine Nolo legal book. This book has a nice history section to help understand the development of USA immigration policy over the past 200 years.While I consider this an excellent resource, for those looking for more specific information they might want to select another Nolo book. For example if you are interested in a fiance visa, this book has one chapter of six pages (plus many pages of examples of forms) and another chapter of 14 pages on a green card via marriage but you might be better off buying their book specifically on "Fiance & Marriage Visas" (512 pages).
I was a bit discouraged by some of the reviews before I bought the book. But I found it a great book for my purposes, which involved gaining a solid foundation about the immigration laws. I think I got that by reading the book. I learned that there are many twists and turns involved with the process. So, I recommend the book to those who want a basic understanding of the different types of visas, who qualifies for each, and the many pitfalls to avoid in the application process. True, there are copies of the various forms that were not of interest to me, as a lay person in the subject. But I have a friend who is an immigration counselor. I now have a much better understanding of what she can get into with clients, and their specific situations and requests/needs. If she knows her stuff, she can really be helpful to folks who do not understand their rights or the pittfalls they need to avoid. For example, in many cases of applications, folks getting married will bar them from immigration, while others in the family who remain unmarried will be fine. Also, coming to the U.S. as a visitor or a student, one must be sure to indicate that they are not coming with the purpose of finding a way to stay. That kind of stuff can really cause you problems later. But if one comes as a visitor or a student, then finds that they want to get married and/or take a job, there are ways to make this work, legally. Come in illegally, and that process is much more difficult. Also, the book, at times, makes very personal comments about how great many visa applicants feel when they finally get approval. For many, it can take 10 or more years.As I have said several times, I recommend this book for its purpose of providing a basic understanding of the different types of visas, how they can be obtained, and the pitfalls to avoid in pursuing them.

Extremely well written and informative. A good precursor to "Fiance and Marriage Visas: A Couple's Guide to US Immigration". But not really needed as the above goes over everything you need.

This book was very helpful. It is easy to read and understand with clear instructions.
bought this to further prepare my fiance and I about our upcoming tasks. Upon receiving it we found that we already had the info. but it would have been a great starting place if we hadn't already researched so much
