Matt LeMay is a product management coach and consultant. He has helped build and scale product management practices at companies ranging from early-stage startups to Fortune 500 enterprises. Matt was selected as a Top 50 Product Management influencer by the PM Year in Review for both 2015 and 2016.Matt is cofounder and partner at Sudden Compass, a consultancy that helps organizations take a cross-functional and customer-centric approach to working with data. In his work as a technology communicator, Matt has developed and led digital transformation and data strategy workshops for companies like GE, American Express, Pfizer, McCann, and Johnson & Johnson.Previously, Matt worked as Senior Product Manager at music startup Songza (acquired by Google), and Head of Consumer Product at Bitly. Super practical and gets to the common core of this fuzzy field called product management. Teaches you how to examine situations. This book isn't about "winning"; it's about putting our egos aside, recognizing reality, and accomplishing greater things than anyone can do themself. Matt pays due respect to the unique challenges of product management without sensationalizing or lionizing. He is sensitive to the wonderful diversity and inconsistency that's part of being human. You come away from the book feeling supported, understood, and empowered. Most of the skills and perspectives he outlines are useful for anyone who wants to work cross-functionally. I highly recommend this read.
I’ve been in the product manager role for a year, I’ve read dozens of articles and several books, I’ve been in charge of old and new products, and this book has been like a gift from the gods to me. There were several situations where what I was reading just happened to me or was about to happen and I was able to apply what I learned with great success.I think this is one of those few books that I want to read several times, I cannot stress enough how reading it helped me as a starting product manager in ways that no other article or book could.
This is a fantasic book. I will recommend this book many times over, and I will buy it for my product managers.Full of great practical advice with everyday insights that get to the muscle of product management , rather than the bones of it.I wish there were many more books written like this. Unlike most business books that are either too dry or that belabor concepts with repetition, run-on stories and too many examples, Matt LeMay shares his experience as though he is sitting across the table and speaking to you, not assuming you know something while respecting that you are intelligent enough to get it once he has said it, and shares one short story to exemplify it. What he shares is a lot of valuable advice and insight.A great book. Really great.
This book reads like hard won advice from a mentor sitting across from you at their favorite coffee shop. Immediately actionable advice for improving your ability to gather information from and share information with users, technical teams, and associated business partners. I recommend this book for anyone that needs to work with software engineering teams.
Love this book. The easiest and most applicable read I've seen on product management, and the "real life examples" were very helpful. Are there any other books more like this??? Best "real world picture" of what a product manager does, how the role changes significantly based on the organization, and how to adapt when it does.
A lot of books these days start as a few useful insights that get expanded into a book with too much fluff. Not in this case. Matt LeMay packs a ton of useful information into a very well written and succinct book that has a ton of useful advice in every chapter. Strongly recommend for all product managers!!!

There are countless other books out there covering the spectrum of hard skills, tools, and methodologies you might encounter, but none of them discuss the day-to-day experience and necessary “soft skills†of product management like this one does. And none of them are nearly as approachable or concise. An excellent choice for anyone new to PM, evaluating their own progress in the field, or building up a Product team. Highly recommended.
