About the Author
August Wilson was a major American playwright whose work has been consistently acclaimed as among the finest of the American theater. His first play, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for best new play of 1984-85. His second play, Fences, won numerous awards for best play of the year, 1987, including the Tony Award, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. Joe Turner's Come and Gone, his third play, was voted best play of 1987-1988 by the New York Drama Critics' Circle. In 1990, Wilson was awarded his second Pulitzer Prize for The Piano Lesson. He died in 2005.

I have read many modern plays in my life, but only very few depict real people as we have seen them and known them, in the past, from the past, and to the future. What made me so connected with this play was how it related to my own experiences with my mother, and also of how my boyfriend had to deal with about the same issues from his own father. My boyfriend is white, and I am black, and we both related to this play as if it were making a snap shot of both our lives during our childhood. But no matter what racial background, many people can relate to the trials and tribulations that one may encounter with their parents. Many people may relate to the fact that sometimes parent and child don't mix. Many may relate to the hardships of trying to be what one's parents never were or never gave, or trying to prevent themselves from ever being like their parents. As mundane as the story may be, this is a story that is very real and true to life. And more than anything, you really do FEEL the characters, the emotions, and have great commiseration for them. I will probably read this play for years to come. Highly Recommended! 10/5 STARS
It's a wonderful story. I have ready it before and used it as material in English literature back in high school in the Caribbean. I wanted it for my American mother-in-law who went to see the movie and loved it. She enjoyed the book and said it's mind consuming than the actual picture.
I loved this book and also saw the movie. In this instance I enjoyed the movie more. However, August Wilson is an excellent story teller. I plan to read his other works, ie The Piano Lesson and Jitney.
August Wilson, author of Fences is one of my favorites. My original copy of this book is missing. So I purchased this one as a replacement. I recommend that everyone who enjoys a film based on a play, should also have a copy of the book if you also collect or view the film on a large screen. The recent movie is great -- and so is the book by August Wilson. A Must Have ! I highly recommend it.
I purchased this used edition for my son. It was on a list for required reading for school as the class no longer provides loaners for students. (I love that you can buy them used) There are many versions available so I was a little worried about getting the right one, but I have heard no complaints from him, his teacher, or his grades.
Great play! Assigned text for class. The discussion that goes along with this text for your classes will either make you love this play or completely hate it, but don’t let that seep too much into your perception of the text.
Never saw the play or the movie, but just read the book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the dialogue. I will definitely be reading more August Wilson after this fine piece of work.
Seriously the best play I have read in a long time. Don't watch the movie just yet. Read this a d allow your own imagination to deliver you the story. Then watch the movie. You want be disappointed!
August Wilson in maybe his most accessible play. Strong characters and story lines.
