About the Author

Thomas O'Keefe was the tour manager for Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown from 1997 until their breakup in 2000; he is currently the tour manager for Weezer. His twenty-plus year career in the music business includes twelve years with Grammy winners Train and shorter stints with acts as diverse as D Generation, Sia, Third Eye Blind, and Mandy Moore. He was also the bass player for North Carolina punk band ANTiSEEN, recording thirty-eight releases and playing concerts across the United States and Europe. O'Keefe lives in Nashville, Tennessee.Joe Oestreich is the author of three books of creative nonfiction: Partisans, Lines of Scrimmage (cowritten with Scott Pleasant), and Hitless Wonder. His work has appeared in Esquire, Creative Nonfiction, River Teeth, Fourth Genre, The Normal School, and many other magazines and journals. Four of his pieces have been cited as notable essays in the Best American series, and he's received special mention twice in the Pushcart Prize anthology. He teaches creative writing at Coastal Carolina University. Oestreich lives in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

As Ryans Adams has become more popular and successful, I wondered if this book was just a cash grab, but I took a chance on it anyway. I was very pleased to discover that it's a legitimate, fair story of his early years touring behind Strangers Almanac and beyond. The stories of the shows and the road are funny, triumphant, disappointing, and occasionally thrilling -- kind of like Ryan Adam's career. The author is clearly a fan of Adam's music, and he treats him with kindness and respect, even when detailing drunken shenanigans and guitar destruction. Recommended.

I can’t say enough good things about this book. It’s got great stories from the road, pragmatic advice for anyone interested in pursuing a career in music or talent management, insights into the music industry, and more great stories. I would recommend this book to anyone whether you’re a fan of Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown or not. I rank this as one of the great rock and roll biographies, right up there with “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead: the life and dirty times of Warren Zevon”, “Please Kill Me”, and “Things the Grandchildren Should Know”. Tom O’Keefe does an amazing job of providing accurate accounts of the early days of Ryan Adam’s career peppered with nuggets of touring dos and don’ts. Strongly recommended for all fans of music and students interested in pursuing a career in the music biz. Stop reading reviews and buy this book!

I'm glad O'Keefe was sober for most of his Whiskeytown days - at least enough to remember the details. And thrilled he leaned on Oestreich to hone the story. I was a Whiskeytown fan and Ryan Adams fan. Not die-hard, but a fan. The book was alternately sad and funny, while offering insights into this band as well as specifics of the music industry. In the end, I felt like I had been along for a portion of the Whiskeytown ride. (It didn't hurt that I'd played some of the same clubs and even opened for WHiskeytown on this tour for one nigth) As soon as I finished the book, I listened to every Whiskeytown and then Ryan Adams release, in chronological order over three days. So the book led me to get immeresed in an artist work like I'd never done before. I'd recommend this to any musician who played in this era, to anyone hoping to be in a working band, and well, anyone who likes a good story.

I bought this book mainly because I know Tom and enjoy talking with him about music when we run into each other. I'm a Ryan Adams fan, but was not as familiar with his work during the Whiskeytown years. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down- finished it in under 24 hours which is rare for me. The writing is excellent and Tom's vast music knowledge and sense of humor come in handy when telling his tale. I read alot of music bios and this book is definitely one of my favorites. It also made me explore Whiskeytown's catalog and its fantastic- the book gained them a new fan 20 years too late. Bonus points for a hilarious GG Allin story.

Great fast read. Would love to have read about Ryan’s teenage years & more about his second stint in New York after the debut solo album came out, but know the author wasn’t around for those chapters of his life. Thomas O’Keefe captures Ryan’s Jekyll & Hyde personality well & I know too well the good shows/bad shows over the years.I’d definitely recommend this to any fan of Ryan or Whiskeytown.

I loved this book. Just finished it last night. As a 20 year fan of Ryan’s — I consider this era to be his best — it was great to gain so much insight into this period. Sad at times, anger inducing, inspirational and honest, O’Keefe delivered the book all fans of RA and WT wanted. Well done. Coupled with the Losering book, fans will get a great picture of the early period of an important artist.

I’m a big Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown fan. I knew Ryan was a little erratic in the early days. It was interesting reading the first hand account of that pivotal tour. The truth is that whiskeytown could’ve been huge if Ryan had wanted it. Clearly he’s found his groove on his own though. I laughed out loud at some of the stories. Good read for all fans.

This was a fascinating look into the life of being a tour manager for an up and coming band with a troubled genius for a lead singer/songwriter. Very well written and any fans of Ryan Adams will absolutely love this book. Thomas treats all members fairly and it shows the relationship he had with Ryan during the Stranger's Almanac tour. I blew through the book in one evening, could not put it down. Highly recommend.
