Janet Beissinger is a research assistant professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago's Institute for Mathematics and Science Education. She helped develop the widely used "Math Trailblazers" curriculum for grades K-5. Vera Pless, also a professor at UIC, is the author of Introduction to Coding Theory and has published over 100 papers.

I bought this book for an advanced reader and placed it strategically without suggesting to read.The book was a siren song for the 7yr old and he flipped through pages, pausing and reading, fetching paper pencil and silent scribbling and ‘ i solved it’!!The language is easy enough for kids to read through on their own. I do guide when a topic is hard but I haven’t been asked to help yet.

The book is everything it claims to be. Since I'm a grandmother who simply likes to solve cryptograms and wanted to learn more about it, I didn't buy the book to use as a teaching tool. I enjoy the fact that it's for middle school students because doing cryptograms is a hobby for me, and I wanted learning to be an enjoyable activity. Explanations are easy to understand and exercises are fun to do. I can see why this would be a fun book for kids, but it's fun for adults, too.

My son takes classes from the CTY program at John Hopkins University and this was a required book. Little did I know he was going to enjoy it and read the book before his class started! My son loved solving the puzzles, reading the stories and finished his class at CTY in a matter of weeks. This book presents the Cryptology material in a fun way that makes kids (ages 8-12) enjoy it and want to keep going. He would not put the book down. This is definately a keeper.The book is pricey (for my 9 yr old)- I think I paid $33.00 but I guess in the land of 'textbooks' that is a steal.

I purchased this book for my son as part of the required text for a summer program bridging 6th and 7th grade. We both loved it. Beginning with the most basic of concepts, the book then guides the novice into ever more challenging territory. Yet, the material is still presented in a fashion that is accessible to all. I found this to be the perfect introduction for a child interested in something different than the routine algebraic problems handed out at this age group. There are problems that need to be solved so be prepared to do some homework though. Overall, an excellent text for children.

Easy to follow book. I am a high school math teacher and bought it to possibly create a class for my students. It's fun for me to work through the problems and I'm sure my students would enjoy it.

The book is excellent and will be a fine addition to my library. It will a great book to use for a summer camp for elementary school children.

A fantastic introduction to cryptography for middle school aga students. I used it for summer enrichment for my 11 year old daughter, and we both loved it. The content is clearly presented and organized. The jokes that the students decrypt are very cute. Great book!
