Review
"By Chapter Four I was cheering 'Yes! We're going back to the seventeenth century.' Dark events trigger a fascinating chase through the centuries that will appeal to fantasy and historical readers alike. Elizabeth and Tegan are back in a heart-warming tale of witchery, female power and tantalising time travel." - Martine Bailey, author of A Taste for Nightshades"When it comes to deftly mingling different fiction genres, Paula Brackston is something of a magician herself. The Return of the Witch, the author’s sequel to her first book, is a spellbinding story comprised of equal measures of fantasy, time-travel, and history spiced up with a generous dash of danger and suspense." ―ReadertoReader.comPraise for The Witch's Daughter:"A riveting tale of sorcery and time travel."-Marie Claire"Well-crafted characters in an absorbing plot and an altogether delicious blend of historical fiction and fantasy." --Booklist"This pleasantly romantic historical fantasy debut flips lightly between the past experiences of ageless witch Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith and her present-day life in Matravers, England... Bess's adventures are fascinating." --Publishers Weekly"Stretching her tale over several centuries, British-based Brackston brings energy as well as commercial savvy to her saga of innocence and the dark arts." --Kirkus“The Witch's Daughter is a must read for anyone who loves magic set in the real world, who craves a well-written novel with historical elements along with romance and witchcraft tied into a tension-filled plot and vivid imagery, and, of course, who seeks an escape from their own lives if only for a moment.†―Huffington Post

I came late to Paula Brackston witch books , but it did not take me long to fall for the magic of them. The Return of the Witch is the long awaited sequel to The Witch`s Daughter and is even more spellbinding as she weaves this beautiful written story of love, loyalty and magic. We pick up the story five years since the dramatic events of Batchcombe woods and find that Gideon has slipped the bonds of magic that held him prisoner and has returned to earth once more. Elizabeth knows where he go-straight for Tegan, her protegee . Paula Brackston has us transported back to the English Civil War and then into the harsh realty of Victorian London as Elizabeth and Time Stepper Erasmus Balmoral face a desperate race against time to save Tegan from Gideon. Once again we have great research weaved into a story that had me page turning well into the early hours of the morning. Paula Brackston is a story-teller of the highest quality and I for one can not wait for her next book.
Love this book from cover to cover......Paula is an excellent author. I have read everything she has ever written. Silver Witch was excellent, Witch of the blue well was fab, take your pick but grab a nice cold drink before you sit down! Keep writing Paula .....we are waiting to give you our money! If you read the Witches Daughter you HAVE to read this one......Gideon gets his just rewards in " the return of the witches daughter"......if you love a good ending that makes you say - Yes ......you go girl!! then read this one.
Ok. So here's the thing. I get needing to give her strength in character to let her take the lead. ( being cryptic to not spoil ) But I missed the strength in the lead of book 1. The UN sure , questioning herself almost constantly and making her seem like less, was unnecessary. Great in a different way is how I would have loved it. Still, good book. Still love the characters. Still want more. Want/need closure . Are time steppers immortal? How will this work? Tell me MORE! I loved the first book. Liked this book. Give me a third to get me back to love. Tie up all my questions.
I bought this because some writers get better with practice, but this is not the case. I read the first, The Witch's Daughter. The writing in Return is odious and dialogue is redundant, not adding anything to the actual conversation. My test of a great book is I have no desire to skip one word. I skipped whole pages and didn't miss a thing. This is harsh, but had I read this review before I purchased four of her books I wouldn't be looking for another book. I just read Roanoke: A Novel of Elizabethan Intrigue. What an outstanding book! Looking for more of that author.
I love Paula Brackston's witch books, but this sequel is not as good as the original and I really prefer the ones where it's a whole new witch at a unique time and place, rather than this rehash of the characters from her first book. There is too much chasing around and the evil Gideon is a vague two dimensional character. He doesn't even appear in person until well into the book, there is lots of thinking about him rather than showing. The idea of time stepping is cool, but carrying the chase through several periods in history gets a bit chaotic and means that each one lacks depth.
I am a new fan of this writer. I have read all her books, waiting for the new one in paperback. This book did not seem to be even written by this writer. I found it to be boring with too many time eras to keep up with. The book just did not seem to read like the others, which I could not out down!
The Witch's Daughter was great and hit the New York Times Bestseller List but its sequel, The Return of the Witch, promises to make the list as well. It is a fast paced romp through history as our twin heroines, Elizabeth and Tegan, travel with Time Stepper Erasmus Balmoral to foil the evil machinations of Gideon Masters. One cannot put this book down as the plot twists and turns. Personally, I'm hoping for another to make this a trilogy.
Nice to reconnect with characters, and meet some new ones. I loved how stepping through time was made so easy for the reader. The careful attention to detail really brought this story to life. I sure hope to see Elizabeth and Tegan again.
