A fascinating and insightful read on one of the overlooked subjects of World War I, Imperial Germany's "Hail Mary" attempt at disrupting the transatlantic convoy system that kept the Allies supplied with food, war materiel, and ultimately American soldiers. Author Paul Hodos does an admirable job of bringing an obscure corner of the Great War to life with his account of U-156's fateful voyage and the men who sailed with her. Anyone interested in the war at sea during World War I, or submarine warfare in general, won't want to miss this.
An inside look at the German perspective on U-boat activity off the U.S. coast near the end of WWI. It sheds some much appreciated light on the mysteries surrounding the July 1918 attack on Orleans Massachusetts by the U-156 as well as the tactic of unrestricted submarine warfare.
Kaiser's Lost Kruezer is an impressive display of both meticulous research and critical thinking. On the one hand, the bibliography touts many historical references from around the world, many of which required the author to translate to English to understand. But on top of that, the author also introduces some of his own theories on events that occurred 100 years ago. Interestingly, aspects of these theories have since been corroborated by the US Navy. The end result of interweaving the factual research with the since validated theories is a compelling story of a highly detailed year long campaign of an infamous U-boat. This is a must read for any fan of World History.
This was quite an interesting story about WW1 submarines and the attempt to make submersible ship. Really the subs of this era were more like torpedo boats that could submerge. in this ships case they added a few deck guns that could challenge other surface combatants and still submerge when needed. Interesting to find out that one these boats actually shelled the USA.
Well written and organized book, I was not aware of the WWI submarine effort by the Germans and how much their tactics changed during WW2. I'm not someone who reads a lot of naval history books but this book was easy to understand and entertaining. I grew up outside of Boston and I didn't know why there was a tree from Canada in the commons...now I know.
The idea of submersible cruisers had it's heyday during and after WW1, but by the start of WW2, the idea had faded into memory. French ships like the Surcouf, or American ships like the Narwhal-class, were an interesting idea, that was ultimately proven useless by the realities of warfare, and the advance of anti-submarine capability. While some submarine cruisers were used during WW2, the idea had already proved essentially useless against anything but individual unarmed merchantmen. This book captures the story of one particular submarine cruiser type, and the effect it had on the war, in a suitably compelling fashion.
Great history of u-boats in WWI. Well written in that regard. Highly speculative on the location of the lost boat. The speculation seemed to ruin a lot of good book for me.
I never really knew much about the wars, but as I now work with vets on a daily basis, I thought that I'd give this book a try. I normally read mysteries or true crime, but this was more narrative. The book was kept me entertained with the story and accompanying photos. I found myself wanting to get through just one more chapter since some were short and ended up reading the whole book fairly quickly! It was such an easy read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes war books or just looking for a little more history.
