This book is a good resource, not only for pastors (especially of large congregations) but also for anyone who functions in any capacity of church or lay leadership. I'm not a pastor, but I was encouraged to maintain the human relationships Dodd describes. Too many leaders struggle in isolation. I hope they'll find this book.
I read this book at the recommendation of a friend and am so glad that I did! Jimmy Dodd speaks from a heart of humility, with grace and wisdom. He has great insight for pastors and church leaders in the areas of spiritual and emotional health. I wish I had this resource at the beginning of my ministry, but am glad that I will be able to share it with the young pastors and church planters I am leading today.In our skim-reading culture, the temptation may exist to jump directly to the “6 Key Relationships,†but I strongly advise you to read the entirety of the book. If you are a leader who is concerned with personal integrity, this is worth your time!
Maybe this book is valuable for someone new to the ministry or considering a call to vocational ministry. For the experienced there is little of value. I gave my copy to a young pastor who is also a seminary student
The folks at PastorServe get it. They get around 19K calls a year from pastors that desperately need a safe place who are often in the midst of crisis. I wonder if those pastors had read and applied the principles of Survive or Thrive those phone calls would've been placed. I wonder if those crises could've been averted. As a relatively young leader - I needed someone to come alongside me and prepare me for a lifetime of ministry. Jimmy does just this in Survive or Thrive. It's a MUST READ for all pastors!
Cannot recommend this highly enough. Jimmy shares a wealth of life experience as a pastor and a pastor of pastors in a way that gets to the heart of the issue. This book demonstrates a deep understanding of the common struggles that pastors face, and invites them to once again taste the goodness of the Gospel they preach, embrace weakness and vulnerability, and surround themselves with strategic relationships that are certain to lead them towards wholeness and health. I'm going to be giving this book to a lot of friends...
Wow! Every pastor and minister should read this book several times for encouragement and strategies to avoid burnout and leaving the ministry all together. It would be great to make this available to all church planters!
Easy read. Practical and especially it he highlighted that 'God created people with an intrinsic need for friendship.' It encourages me to respond 'to building healthy friendship' and especially as leaders we 'never walk alone'.
I wish I could get this book into the hands of every pastor and Christian leader. If you're even "just" leading your family, you can profit greatly from this book from a man whose heat is great, not only for other men - and especially pastors - but for Jesus. Read, enjoy and be challenged!!
